Sebastian Inlet District 2024/2025 Sand Trap Dredging and Beach Placement – Frequently Asked Questions

A dump truck on a sandy path, carrying a large load of sand.

Where is the project located?

The project is located at Sebastian Inlet State Park. Maintenance dredging will occur within the Sebastian Inlet Channel and sand will be placed  along a 2.5-mile stretch spanning from the state park to approximately 1,500 feet south of Ambersand Beach.

What does the project entail?

Plans call for hydraulically dredging approximately 215,000 cubic yards of beach-compatible sand from a designated sand trap and adjacent navigation channel located within Sebastian Inlet. Sand will be placed on the downdrift beaches (as explained above). The project also includes placing approximately 80,000 cubic yards of additional beach compatible sand trucked in from an upland sand source.

When will the project begin and what is its duration?

The contractor, ATL Diversified, Inc., of West Palm Beach, FL, anticipates construction to begin the week of January 6, 2025 and run through April 30, 2025.

Will the project impact navigation or beach access?

Navigation will be impacted periodically while the dredger is in operation. Local notices to mariners will be issued. On the south beaches, access will be limited during sand placement and grading.

What is the goal of the project?

The project is necessary for the Sebastian Inlet District to meet its requirement to  bypass sand that migrates into the inlet system to downdrift beaches per the Florida Beach & Shore Preservation Act.

What is the cost of the project?

Design and construction costs for the project are approximately $7 million.
