Week of October 21: Despite rough seas, margates, snappers, jacks were biting

Angler of the week: We didn't catch his name, but this happy angler caught a 30-inch snook using live finger mullet. He caught this beast at the seawall (in the background) near the bait and tackle shop.  Please, please, please send us your pics!  We need photos and stories to include in upcoming fishing reports.   Send in a picture and the details of your fishing trip to the inlet by using the Contact Form on our website.  Pictures work best vertical and if you center the person with their catch, leaving room on the sides.

Today's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, a high of 81 degrees, NE winds of 16 mph, and four to six-foot seas.

"Snookman" Wayne Landry gives us the lowdown on the fishing scene at Sebastian Inlet:

"Good morning, Sebastian Inlet fishing fans. I hope everyone had a great weekend! It sure was nice out, except for the high winds and rough seas. First, a heads up on the upcoming North Jetty Revetment Improvement Project. Construction is slated to begin on November 4, when crews will start mobilizing heavy equipment and materials, fencing off the area as a construction site. Access to the north jetty will, at times, be OFF LIMITS for the duration of the project.

If you are planning to visit the north jetty, I would suggest you call the north ranger station at 321-984-4852 to check on the jetty’s access status. Additional information can be found here: www.sitd.us/news-events . Frequent updates will also be posted on the Sebastian Inlet District Facebook and Instagram pages.

Also, if you noticed, the webcam is down due to storm damage, and will remain down for the duration of the construction project. The cameras have been removed so as to not sustain any damage by the heavy equipment in the area.

Also, information is also posted on the Sebastian Inlet State Park website at:

Now on to the fishing. As you all know, the winds were absolutely brutal over the past week and through the weekend. With seas running six to seven feet and morning high king tides along the coast, it was pretty much a war zone down at the jetties. The waves were breaking over the north and south jetties and rocks, making it dangerous to be out there.

However, there were quite a few folks risking their safety to catch a fish. About the only species I saw caught were many jack crevalle and ladyfish on the north jetty. The seaweed was thick as well, making it tough to fish. Not ideal conditions at all. Back inside the inlet, along the north seawall between the jetty and bridge, I did see Spanish mackerel caught, along with nice black margates, sand perch, and various snappers, mangrove and schoolmaster snappers. They were all keepers! One young man I saw did catch a nice slot snook in that area on live mullet, as pictured in the Angler of the Week photo at the top of this page.

South side, in the back, around the cleaning table and the T-dock, there was activity as the water quality had improved. The incoming tide was producing snook on live pigfish and shrimp. Also a few nice catch-and-release redfish. Spanish mackerel and jacks picked up the slack for those tossing small jigs and spoons to the channel area. Not much else back here.

So, there you have it for this week's report. The winds and seas are expected to calm down by Thursday. So, we'll see how that goes. Have a great week!” — Snookman.
